If like our dog, your dog loves tennis balls to play with - chase, fetch and carry - but has an unfortunate ability to loose them when out on a walk, you may have also searched for a cheap alternative. Our dog loves his tennis balls and will always bring one to drop at your feet when it is walk time. He loves to chase them when thrown for him, or even better, when flung with one of those plastic ball flingers you can buy. Unfortunately, he likes to carry them when he's got them - and then loves to drop them when we aren't looking, preferably in some impenetrable undergrowth! The net result is - we always need more! We've tried cheap tennis balls from toys shops, but he is a big dog and a few squeezes of his jaw tends to pop these apart at the seams, which renders them useless and I also worry they could prove dangerous to him if he continued to chew them. The solution I stumbled upon is to buy used tennis balls - I had no idea there was a market for such things! eBay, provider of all things unusual has many sellers of used tennis balls, in all sorts of quantities. These used tennis balls are the perfect solution for us - decent quality well-known makes of tennis balls, just used and at a fraction of the price of the new equivalent. There are so many available as a tennis ball only has a limited life, especially in club competitions before it uses its bounce and needs replacing. Apparently, with top professional players a ball will probably only be used for 7 games before it is in need of replacing, and even at club level they are useless for play after a short while. Hence why there are so many used tennis balls available to buy!
I have seen it reported that tennis balls are bad for dogs as the 'fuzz' on a tennis ball wears down their teeth. However, I have never yet seen that reported directly by an authority such as vet, it has always been of the 'my vet says' second hand reporting. Urban Myth? I don't know. I believe them to be safe - but you should always supervise your dog and remove the tennis ball for safety's sake if he looks like he is settling in for a good chew. A used tennis ball makes a great dog toy, but a rubbish dog chew!
